A popular freshwater cichlid native to Nigeria and Cameroon. Males of this species can grow up to approximately 12.5 cm (4.9 in), while females are smaller, reaching about 8.1 cm (3.2 in). Both sexes display a dark longitudinal stripe from the caudal fin to the mouth and have pink to red abdomens, with the intensity of the red coloration increasing during courtship and breeding.

These fish are omnivorous, feeding on algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates in the wild, though in captivity they thrive on a varied diet including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.

Red kribensis are cave spawners, meaning they breed in excavated holes or artificial caves, where the female lays adhesive eggs in rows on the upper surface and both parents provide brood care for about 21–28 days. The female is primarily responsible for fry care, while the male focuses on territorial defense. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding, and are best kept in pairs or with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. A spacious tank with a sandy substrate, plenty of hiding spots such as rocks, driftwood, and plants, and water parameters of pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 76–82°F, and hardness 5–15 dGH are recommended for optimal health and breeding success.

The species is known for its vibrant coloration and engaging parental behaviors, making it a favorite among cichlid enthusiasts!!
